BROWN, Marie née Van Brittan, African-American. In 1969 she patented an audio-visual door monitor to improve home security. It was an early form of CCTV surveillance with audio and visual elements. The resident could scan the exterior, talk with the caller and automatically unlock the door. The patent was jointly with her husband, but Marie was the principal inventor.
