Harriet Strong

STRONG, Harriet, American rancher, 1844-1929. Harriet proposed some detailed water storage and irrigation systems involving river canyons. She held various patents in relation to these ideas. When exhibited as models her water storage designs won awards, but Harriet never got to see the dams she proposed for the Colorado River. It is now acknowledged that there was much merit in her concepts of water storage. She was the first woman member of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. Her other inventions relate to doors and windows, methods of opening them from a distance, sash-holding frames and the like.
