Anita Roddick

RODDICK, Anita Lucia, née Perella, English entrepreneur, 1942 - 2007. Founder of the Body Shop concept with a single store in Brighton, 1976. She formulated a few products using only natural materials and using refillable plastic bottles. This concept became fashionable, resulting in a worldwide business with hundreds of shops, and a huge product range. Her career, prior to this had involved teaching and some work at the UN. This background led her to the concepts of caring capitalism, fair trade with the Third World, and a dislike of animal testing for cosmetics products. Personally travelled worldwide looking for sources of natural materials. Much liked by the staff for her enlightened attitudes to working conditions and employee relationships. Anita received many awards from environmental organisations for her ethical philosophies.
