EKEBLAD, Eva Gardie, Swedish inventor. Particularly famous for her method of making schnapps. Grain was in short supply in Sweden so she used potatoes. There was consternation when this prolific inventor was proposed for membership of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences (in 1784). However, her supporters pointed out that Bologna Academy (Italy) had just admitted a woman, so in the end Eva did get elected.
